Porcelain veneers, also known as porcelain laminates, are thin shells of porcelain which fit exactly over the front surfaces of the teeth. Veneers have the unique ability to completely mask unattractive stains while letting light through to appear entirely real. Porcelain veneers are the most commonly used cosmetic procedure for smile makeovers and are used to mask imperfections like stains and discoloration; chipped, broken, cracked, misshapen, uneven, crooked, small and gapped teeth alike can all be improved with porcelain veneers. Like fake fingernails, they are affixed with an adhesive to the front surfaces of teeth.
Before choosing a cosmetic procedure like porcelain veneers, Dr. Layliev meets with patients at our NYC dental office for a consultation. The consultation is for you and the doctor to meet and so that you have all the information you need before undergoing the procedure. A full examination of the teeth and gums is then performed to determine if you are a candidate that’s fit for porcelain veneers.
Porcelain veneers are extremely durable and made to withstand the test of time. First, the teeth are minimally prepared, an impression is taken, and a provisional is fabricated. This temporary serves to illustrate a specific style that allows us to utilize all the smile design elements that are custom tailored for your specific likeness and physical attributes. In this phase, we can determine whether the design in color, shape and size complements and achieves the expectations of what is planned for the permanent veneer result. This information is conveyed to our lab ceramist to achieve the optimal result. At the insert visit, the veneers are tried in and custom evaluated for fit and aesthetics before they are cemented in.
Since porcelain veneers are placed directly on your natural tooth enamel, they should be cared for in the same manner as your regular teeth. This entails keeping up with an excellent oral hygiene routine and attending regular dental cleanings every few months. Porcelain veneers are created to be naturally stain resistant and resilient. However, by minimizing the normal consumption of products such as, but not limited to, coffee, red wine and tobacco, patients will be able to prolong their bright white, pearly presence. Additionally, in order for veneers not to chip over time, it’s equally important to not grind your teeth, clench them, or bite and chew on unusually hard foods, such as hard candy or ice. Mouth guards are helpful and recommended once veneers are placed. By adopting a superlative dental care routine, porcelain veneers have the ability to last for decades.
